Growing Dogwoods

Location: The best spot for Dogwoods would give them full sun in the morning with filtered shade in the afternoon. It can be a delicate balance as too much shade will diminish blooming and fall color, and too much sun can burn the leaves. Of course, this perfect site isn’t always available and Dogwoods are often planted in full sun. When doing this just be aware that your tree will need more water in the summer and the leaves may burn.

Planting: When planting new trees, be sure to use a transplant fertilizer. Also, water in well after transplanting, even if there is rain.

Watering: Many dogwood problems stem from improper watering. During the first year your tree will need regular watering. Slow-release irrigation is the best method to soak the roots.?Using a lawn sprinkler will NOT work. Trees should be watered deeply and infrequently. When temperatures are in the 80s you’ll want to water for half an hour. Hotter temps require more frequent watering.
