Wickwar Flame Heather is one our all-time favorites. The coloring of this variety, especially in winter, just can’t be beat. Yellow-gold summer foliage turns stunningly bright red in winter. Summer brings lavender blooms that stand out against the foliage. Wickwar Flame grows well in full sun, but in hot climates will benefit from afternoon shade. Prune Wickwars back to the old wood in early spring to encourage healthier plants. Cold hardy to -25?F.
Calluna vulgaris, commonly called Scotch Heather or Summer Heather is an evergreen shrub that grows in a small mound. They can be pruned in the fall to keep their shape tidier.
Calluna Heather plants will grow and bloom best in full sun, but can also tolerate part shade. Full sun will produce much brighter winter foliage coloring. Good soil drainage is essential with heather to prevent root disease. It is also crucial that they are watered regularly in the summer until they are well established.
