Encore Azaleas like Autumn Amethyst are stunning plants for any landscape in our area. Autumn Amethyst is an evergreen shrub with lovely purple foliage in winter. A heavy bloom of purple flowers appears in spring with lighter blooming again in late summer, early fall.
The main draw of Encore Azaleas is the repeat blooms, but they have many other great benefits. Encore Azaleas are cold and heat tolerant, so they will handle full sun better than some other evergreen azaleas. They are disease resistant and their tight growth habit makes them easy to care for.
Similar to most azaleas, Encore Azaleas appreciate moist, well draining, acidic soil. When planting, use a good quality planting compost and do not plant too deep. Water them regularly, especially during the first year. When they are in full sun they may need to be watered more frequently. Fertilize with an acid plant food in mid spring and again in early summer.
